The PSOAS Recycling Ranking campaign has come to an end, and the results speak for themselves. By gamifying recycling, we succeeded in significantly reducing sorting errors, and that showed directly across PSOAS properties.
Results Exceeded Expectations
During the campaign, sorting errors decreased considerably compared to the three months before the campaign and the same period a year ago. As the campaign progressed, sorting errors started to decline, which showed that tenants adopted better sorting habits as part of their everyday lives.
Particularly impressive progress was seen in the Linnanmaa area at Yliopistokatu, where sorting errors dropped noticeably during the campaign. The campaign winner, Syynimaa, achieved a perfect result, since not a single sorting error was recorded in the area throughout the entire campaign.
“With the Recycling Ranking campaign, we wanted to highlight the importance of recycling and its impact on the quality of living. As a responsible landlord, we want to make recycling visible. PSOAS has long provided good recycling facilities, but recycling starts with our residents. Gamification Works as a Recycling Motivator
Recycling Ranking showed that recycling can be made engaging and communal. In the campaign, PSOAS student housing areas started with a full score and the goal was to keep it as high as possible. When the impact of sorting is made visible and a healthy dose of competitive spirit is added, tenants rose to the challenge.
The enthusiasm was also visible in practice. At the start of the campaign, recycling bags were handed out from PSOAS offices and were gone in no time. This was a clear sign that tenants want to recycle and were ready to act. Small everyday choices added up to a big change.
Recycling Continues After the Campaign
Through Recycling Ranking, we made recycling communal and visible. PSOAS has supported residents’ recycling for decades in many ways: all areas have comprehensive recycling points for different waste types, sorting stickers have been distributed to apartments, and sorting instructions are easily available online. We want recycling to be a smooth part of student life.
