What does a modern student apartment look like? Come and see for yourself when Ullankartano in Välkkylä opens its doors on Wednesday 3 June 2026 at 12 to 3 pm. The building is currently undergoing renovation, and this is your first chance to explore what student housing looks like today, before the renovation is complete.

Come and see how students live today

Student housing has changed a great deal over the decades and it keeps evolving. Following the renovation, Ullankartano will offer a functional, comfortable, and modern home for students. At the open house, you’ll get a concrete look at what quality student housing means: how the spaces are designed, what the communal areas look like, and the kind of home students can build their lives in.

Three model apartments and newly renovated shared spaces will be on display. PSOAS staff will be on hand to tell you about the property and answer any questions.

🅿️ There is limited disc parking in the area. Additional parking is available at Oulu Hall (Ouluhalli), a short walk from the building.
⚠️ Please note: the spaces on display are not accessible – they are located on two different floors, reached by stairs only. The surrounding area is still a construction site.

Ullankartano is part of the Välkkylä student village

Construction in Välkkylä began in the 1960s, marking the start of large-scale student housing development in Oulu. The buildings in the area are named after key figures in the history of the foundation and student housing in Oulu – names like Sampola, Seponpaja and Ullankartano carry with them a sense of history and community.

Välkkylä continues to grow and evolve. The latest addition to the area is UNO, a tower block designed to encourage community living and an active lifestyle, which opened in April 2024. Older buildings in the area are being renovated one by one: Seponpaja was completed in January 2024 and Sampola in September 2025.

The renovation of Ullankartano began in autumn 2025, with completion planned for autumn 2026. The open house on 3 June is the first opportunity to see how the renewed Ullankartano will look like before applications open in summer 2026.
