PSOAS is encouraging student residents in Oulu to recycle better in their everyday lives. The Recycling Ranking campaign aims to reduce mixed waste, sorting errors, and unnecessary waste management costs, while improving recycling rates across PSOAS student housing in Oulu.
The campaign shows up in residents’ daily lives in concrete ways: clear recycling instructions, good recycling opportunities, and a shared campaign that makes recycling easy to understand – and even fun. At the same time, the campaign supports PSOAS’s environmental and financial goals.
Recycling Made Easy in PSOAS Student Housing in Oulu
All PSOAS areas have comprehensive recycling points with separate bins for plastic, biowaste, cardboard, glass, metal, paper, and mixed waste. Residents have received sorting stickers for their apartments, and recycling instructions are also easily available online.
Sorting correctly isn’t just good for the environment. When wrong items end up in recycling bins, the bins have to be emptied as mixed waste, which leads to extra collections and costs. Correctly sorted waste gets recycled and reduces unnecessary strain on the system.
Recycling Ranking Turns Recycling into a Team Effort
At the heart of the campaign is the Recycling Ranking, a gamified recycling competition for student housing areas in Oulu. Every area started the campaign with a full score, and the goal is to keep it as high as possible. Sorting errors chip away at the points as they occur. Progress is tracked through a live leaderboard online, and the area that best holds onto its points wins the prize.
The campaign has been warmly received. Recycling bags were handed out from the PSOAS offices at the start of the campaign and were gone in no time – a clear sign that recycling is a topic that matters to PSOAS residents. The recycling campaign runs until the beginning of May, and we look forward to seeing the final results.
