Välkkylä is widely regarded as an ideal place to live. It is an integral part of the rich history of student culture in Oulu and continues to play a significant role in the present day.

Välkkylä offers an idyllic setting, with its proximity to nature and tranquil atmosphere. The area’s aesthetic appeal is highlighted by the presence of red brick houses nestled on a pine-covered hill, as well as the abundance of rowans and birches in the vicinity. This location is situated just a kilometer from the vibrant city center, offering a unique blend of tranquility and accessibility.

The student village of Välkkylä, which was built between 1966 and 1971, underwent its first renovation between 1993 and 1995. New construction in the Välkkylä area began in the fall of 2022. The construction may result in noise disturbances for nearby residents.

Välkkylä is seven kilometers from the Linnanmaa university area, but the bus ride is brief. The Kontinkangas campus, the university hospital, and Medipolis are within a few minutes’ walking distance, as are the train and bus stations.

Services

Ouluhalli, Raksila swimming pool, ice rink, and Raksila sports park are located in close proximity to Välkkylä. Three large supermarkets are located half a kilometer away.

Residents have access to a variety of facilities, including a sauna, a laundry room, a sewing room, a billiards room, a gym, a children’s playroom, and a photography laboratory managed by the Oulu Student Camera Club. Välkkylä is also home to the city’s daycare center and the City Biljard billiard hall.

Bus connection

Välkkylä has good bus connections to the city and the university. Buses run from Kajaanintie. The road takes you there and the journey is quick.
