PSOAS and the University of Oulu are jointly organising an international architecture competition for the new Kontinkangas university campus. The competition has now officially launched.
The University of Oulu is relocating from Linnanmaa to Kontinkangas, with a significant number of student apartments planned as part of the new campus. Approximately 30,000 square metres are designated for student housing, providing around 600–1,000 housing places. The new campus will be located south of the university hospital area, closer to the city centre.
“PSOAS is strongly involved in planning a vibrant and appealing university campus of the future, where student housing plays a key role. We are excited to see the proposals from the international architectural competition on what future student housing could look like,” says PSOAS CEO Ville Isoherranen.
An exceptional competition in Oulu
The competition is exceptional in scale, as architectural competitions are rarely organised in Northern Finland. The competition seeks an architectural vision for the future of the campus area: what does a functional, attractive and community-driven university campus look like decades from now?
The competition connects to both the 150th anniversary of Finnish architecture competitions and Oulu’s year as European Capital of Culture, bringing international expertise and fresh perspectives to university and student housing architecture in Oulu.
International competition runs in two phases
The competition runs in two phases. The first phase takes place from May 25th to October 2nd, 2026, after which the jury will select the most promising entries to advance to the second phase, which begins in January 2027. The winner will be announced in June 2027.
The competition jury includes representatives from the University of Oulu, the Student Union of the University of Oulu, PSOAS, the City of Oulu, Pohde and SAFA.
The competition is organised in collaboration with the City of Oulu, the North Ostrobothnia Wellbeing Services County Pohde and the Finnish Association of Architects SAFA.
