According to the International Student Barometer 2024, Oulu stands out in international students’ experiences, especially in housing quality and safety. Students studying in Oulu consider the city safe and find housing options highly competitive compared to other student cities worldwide.
Housing and safety were highlighted as Oulu’s strongest areas in the survey. The standard of housing and good housing options were rated among the best globally, earning Oulu the top spot in the international comparison. The study shows that 58% of international students find a home for under 400€ per month, and just 11% have housing costs above 600€.
PSOAS is particularly pleased with these results.
“Being number one globally is a great recognition of PSOAS’s long-term work for student housing in Oulu. Increasing the number of furnished apartments has especially supported the arrival of international students,” says CEO Ville Isoherranen.
International students in Oulu are also broadly satisfied with their overall experience: 90% are happy with their learning. Oulu’s appeal is boosted by accessible housing, reasonable study costs, high-quality research, and promising career opportunities.
Everyday life runs smoothly too. For most the campus is within walking distance, and commute takes less than 20 minutes.
The International Student Barometer (ISB) is a global benchmark survey involving 132 universities in 24 countries. The University of Oulu’s response rate was 35%, with a total of 603 respondents.
