Resident's Guide
The coziness of your living environment and how much you enjoy living there also depends a lot on if the common areas and yards of the building are kept clean and are taken care of. The first impression you have of the living environment, the property and its residents is formed by exactly these types of issues.
Staircase and elevator
In apartment buildings, the staircases and elevators are the common areas that are used the most; these areas are not suitable for hanging out in. For fire safety reasons, you may only store items in the places that have been specifically reserved for this purpose. Neither the staircase nor the vestibule may be used to store prams or strollers, car seats, summer or winter toys or leisure-time equipment. (The residents of the family apartments at Välkkylä 4-6 and Virkakatu 8 may, however, store prams and strollers in the staircases due to a lack of space).
The external doors to the staircases usually have electronic locks that are locked for the night. Once the doors have been locked, if you go in or out of them, you must make sure that the door locks itself again. Some properties have a door code; the doors for these properties are locked all day long. The door code is only meant to be used by the residents of the property in question. It is not recommended that you reveal the door code to anyone, not even to your best friend, in order to ensure that the common areas such as the staircases are not misused. If you find that there are people in the staircases in the evening or at night that do not belong there, please notify the janitor on duty at the time.
Balconies
The common balconies and the balconies in individual apartments can be used for airing bedding, etc. You may not beat rugs on the balconies unless this has been agreed upon beforehand. In addition, you may not throw garbage from the balcony. The balconies should be cleaned by the people using them. Balconies must be kept up; in winter, any snow that has fallen on them should be shoveled off of them. In addition, you may not grill, etc. on the balconies. If you would like to hang up a clothesline, it must be located so that it is not visible from the yard or the street. Nothing may be hung on the other side of the balcony railing.
